The Best Bushwhacker in Gulf Shores

Who has the best Bushwhacker in Gulf Shores?

Best Bushwhacker
If you spend any time on the Alabama Gulf Coast, you learn pretty quickly that asking “Who has the best Bushwhacker in Gulf Shores?” will start a friendly debate that might last longer than your vacation. The Bushwhacker is the unofficial beach drink of the Gulf Coast, a creamy, coffee-chocolate adult milkshake that has been part of the local culture for decades and is now celebrated with its own “Bushwacker Trail” across the region.

On a recent trip I decided to turn that debate into a mission. I, Matt Glass, set out on a Bushwhacker crawl through Gulf Shores and nearby favorites, scoring each drink on a ten point scale based on flavor, balance, strength, presentation, and overall vibes. What follows is my totally unscientific but very enjoyable verdict on where to find the best Bushwhacker in Gulf Shores.

Here is how the scores shook out:
  • Bahama Bob’s – 10 / 10 (with a floater)
  • The Hangout – 9.4 / 10
  • Tacky Jacks – 8.6 / 10
  • LuLu’s – 7.8 / 10
  • Pirates Cove – 7.2 / 10
  • Lauria’s – 5 / 10
Let’s break it down.

What Makes a Great Gulf Shores Bushwhacker

Before we get into the bar by bar breakdown, here is what I looked for in each Bushwhacker:
  • Flavor balance – Coffee, chocolate, coconut, and rum should all show up without any one note taking over.
  • Texture – Thick and creamy, closer to a milkshake than a slushy.
  • Kick – This is a dessert that can sneak up on you. The strength should be noticeable but not harsh.
  • Presentation – Chocolate drizzle, whipped cream, cherries, and a rum floater all earn style points.
  • Vibe – The view, music, service, and general “you are at the beach” feeling matter too.
With that in mind, here is how each spot stacked up.

Bahama Bob’s – 10 / 10, “With a Floater!”

Location: 601 W Beach Blvd, Gulf Shores

Bahama Bob’s is a classic beachfront café right on West Beach Boulevard, known for “the very best of everything you come to the beach for” and a laid back, toes-in-the-sand atmosphere.

Their Bushwhacker lives up to the hype and then some. It is rich, perfectly blended, and delivers that ideal coffee-chocolate profile without being overly sweet. Add the optional rum floater on top and it turns into a smooth but serious cocktail that still drinks like dessert. Local chatter and online reviews consistently call out Bahama Bob’s Bushwhacker as one of the best in town, and I fully agree.

Why it scored a 10:

  • Thick, creamy texture with no ice chunks
  • Strong but not overpowering, especially with the floater
  • Classic beach bar vibe with Gulf views and casual service
If you only have time for one Bushwhacker in Gulf Shores, this is my pick.

The Hangout – 9.4 / 10

Location: Where Highway 59 meets the beach, Gulf Shores

The Hangout is one of Gulf Shores most iconic gathering spots. It sits right at the end of Highway 59 and bills itself as the ultimate beachfront destination for live music, family fun, and big beach energy.
The Hangout Restaurant

Their Bushwhacker fits the setting perfectly. It is fun, photogenic, and surprisingly well balanced for such a high-volume venue. The texture leans slightly lighter than Bahama Bob’s, but it is still creamy and indulgent. Seasonal spins like peanut butter Bushwhackers and over-the-top garnishes occasionally show up, which keeps things interesting.

Why it scored a 9.4:
  • Great balance of flavor and strength
  • Awesome people watching, live entertainment, and beach access
  • Slightly less “classic” than Bahama Bob’s, but a very close second
This is the Bushwhacker you drink when you want a party atmosphere to go with your frozen cocktail.

Tacky Jacks – 8.6 / 10

Locations: Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan, and Orange Beach

Tacky Jacks is a beloved waterfront chain with multiple locations around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, known for big breakfasts, casual seafood, and easygoing marina views.

Their menu proudly calls out a “Famous Bushwacker” that has even been voted best on the coast in some local polls.

The drink lives up to the branding. It is creamy, boozy, and usually arrives in a generous portion. The flavor profile is more rum-forward and a bit less chocolate heavy than some others on this list, which some people will love.

Why it scored an 8.6:
  • Strong, grown-up Bushwhacker with a nice rum bite
  • Relaxed waterfront setting that feels very Gulf Coast
  • Loses a few points for consistency – some days are better than others
If you are already heading to Tacky Jacks for breakfast or sunset, do yourself a favor and add a Bushwhacker to the order.

LuLu’s – 7.8 / 10

Location: Under the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge in Gulf Shores

LuLu’s, founded by Lucy Buffett, is famous for its family friendly vibe, live music, and big menu of coastal favorites. It is also proud of its “World Famous Bushwhacker,” made with vanilla ice cream, coffee liqueur, coconut rum, chocolate, and usually finished with a rum floater and a cherry.

On paper, this is everything you want in a Bushwhacker, and it mostly delivers. It is sweet, creamy, and very approachable. For my taste, it lands a little on the dessert side and a little less on the cocktail side, but if you like your Bushwhacker smooth, sweet, and easy drinking, LuLu’s is a great choice.

Why it scored a 7.8:
  • Classic, recipe-driven Bushwhacker with a nice chocolate swirl
  • Ideal for people who want a “gateway” Bushwhacker that is not too strong
  • Busy environment can make it more “family restaurant with a drink” than pure beach bar vibes
Pair it with live music and waterfront views and you will not be disappointed.

Pirates Cove – 7.2 / 10

Location: Josephine / Elberta, on Arnica Bay

Pirates Cove is a Gulf Coast legend. This waterfront “riff raff” bar and marina has been around since the late 1950s and is known for its laid back atmosphere, iconic cheeseburgers, and, yes, legendary Bushwhackers.

This Bushwhacker is all about history and setting. You sip it surrounded by boaters, dogs, live music, and that very specific “old school bay bar” energy. It is tasty and ice-cream based, often with the option to add a high proof rum floater. From a pure flavor and texture standpoint, I have had smoother, but the experience is memorable.

Why it scored a 7.2:
  • Classic stop for Bushwhacker fans and part of the regional lore
  • Fun, slightly chaotic waterfront hangout that feels like the real Gulf Coast
  • Points off for consistency and texture, but still a must try for the story alone
If you are doing a true Bushwhacker pilgrimage, Pirates Cove belongs on your list.

Lauria’s – 5 / 10

Location: 412 W Beach Blvd, Gulf Shores

Lauria’s by the Beach is a family owned Italian bistro and beach bar with locations in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, known for gelato, Italian favorites, and a beachy bar menu.

Some reviewers rave about their Bushwhacker, especially versions made with fresh gelato, which is a fun twist on the classic.

On my visit, the concept was better than the execution. The Bushwhacker leaned very sweet and more like a straight dessert shake, with less of the depth and balance I look for in the drink. It was not bad, just not on the same level as the heavy hitters above.

Why it scored a 5:

  • Creative gelato angle is interesting
  • Needs more balance between sweetness, coffee notes, and rum
  • Worth trying if you are already there for food, but not a destination Bushwhacker for me
And the Winner Is…

After plenty of “research,” my top spot for Best Bushwhacker in Gulf Shores goes to Bahama Bob’s, with The Hangout earning a very strong honorable mention. Bahama Bob’s nails the classic formula with a perfect balance of flavor, texture, and beachfront atmosphere, especially if you order it “with a floater.”

That said, one of the joys of a Gulf Shores vacation is making your own call. The Bushwhacker culture here is deep and proud, and part of the fun is comparing notes with locals and fellow travelers along the Bushwacker Trail.
Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

Tips for Your Own Bushwhacker Crawl
  • Pace yourself – These drinks are delicious and deceptively strong.
  • Share flights – Split one Bushwhacker at each stop if you want to sample several in a day.
  • Mix in water and food – Most of these spots have great seafood, burgers, or appetizers, which helps balance things out.
  • Use ride share or walk the beach – Safety first, especially if you are chasing rum floaters.
Final Thoughts

If you love frozen cocktails, beach bars, and a little friendly debate, Gulf Shores is your happy place. The Bushwhacker is more than just a drink here, it is a local tradition and a rite of passage for visitors. From the perfection at Bahama Bob’s to the high-energy fun of The Hangout and the old school charm of Pirates Cove, each stop on this Bushwhacker journey brings its own personality to the glass.

By Steven LoGalbo November 26, 2025
The Gulf Coast has long been celebrated for its sugar-white beaches, coastal charm, and warm Southern hospitality, but for golf enthusiasts, it offers something even more extraordinary. Stretching from Alabama to Florida and beyond, the Gulf Coast is home to some of the most stunning and diverse golf courses in the United States. With year-round mild weather, lush landscapes, and sweeping waterfront views, this region has become a top golf destination for players of all skill levels. Whether you are planning a golf vacation, looking to challenge yourself on championship-level greens, or simply hoping to enjoy a relaxing round near the beach, the Gulf Coast delivers an unforgettable experience. Its vibrant culture, world-class amenities, and exceptional course design make golfing here not just a sport, but a full sensory escape. From iconic links-style layouts shaped by PGA legends to peaceful courses tucked within protected wildlife preserves, the Gulf Coast continues to attract golfers who value both the game and the breathtaking scenery that surrounds it. Course Selection Criteria To curate the list of the best Gulf Coast golf courses, several key factors were considered to ensure each course offers an exceptional overall experience. Course design played a major role, focusing on layouts crafted by renowned architects and PGA professionals that offer a balance of challenge and enjoyment. Difficulty level was also evaluated, allowing golfers to choose courses suited to beginners, intermediate players, or seasoned pros. Amenities such as modern clubhouses, high-quality dining, pro shops, and extensive practice facilities contributed to a course’s ranking, as did customer service and course maintenance. Finally, atmosphere and scenic value were assessed, recognizing how coastal terrain, wildlife, and natural beauty elevate the golfing experience. Together, these criteria helped identify the most impressive and memorable golf courses along the Gulf Coast. Top Gulf Coast Golf Courses 1. Kiva Dunes Golf Course – Gulf Shores, Alabama Opened in 1995 and designed by U.S. Open champion Jerry Pate, Kiva Dunes stands as one of Alabama’s most acclaimed public golf courses. Built into rolling dunes and natural coastal vegetation, the course blends seamlessly with the landscape, offering golfers unobstructed views and refreshing Gulf breezes. Its signature hole, the par-3 17th, is known for its elevated tee box and panoramic views of the dunes. Kiva Dunes also features a full-service clubhouse, on-site dining, and immaculate practice facilities. With its strategic bunkering and windswept fairways, it is best suited for intermediate to advanced golfers. Many players describe Kiva Dunes as “links golf with Southern charm” and consistently praise its pristine conditions. 2. Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club – Gulf Shores, Alabama Nestled along the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, Peninsula offers a unique coastal golf setting across three distinct 9-hole courses: Marsh, Lakes, and Cypress. Designed by Earl Stone, the course opened in 1995 and has since become known for its immaculate landscaping and tranquil environment. Scenic water features, moss-covered oaks, and diverse wildlife create an immersive experience. Amenities include a modern clubhouse, indoor and outdoor dining, a fitness center, and tennis courts. With its wide fairways and forgiving rough, Peninsula is ideal for beginners and intermediate players, though the Marsh course provides challenges for more experienced golfers. Visitors frequently comment on the course’s peaceful atmosphere and exceptional pace of play. 3. Craft Farms Golf Resort – Gulf Shores, Alabama Craft Farms is home to two of Alabama’s only Arnold Palmer-designed courses: Cotton Creek and Cypress Bend. Cotton Creek, the older of the two, opened in 1987 and features tree-lined fairways, tight doglegs, and subtle elevation changes. Cypress Bend, opened in 1993, offers a more resort-style experience with wide fairways, large greens, and water hazards on nearly every hole. Both courses include Palmer’s signature design style emphasizing playability and strategy. The resort provides excellent amenities such as a full practice facility, Palmer-inspired clubhouse, and on-site golf instruction. These courses cater to golfers of all skill levels, making it a versatile and popular destination. Testimonials often highlight Craft Farms’ friendly staff and consistently well-maintained greens. 4. Surrounded by wetlands and towering pines, the course features wide fairways, smooth-rolling greens, and challenging par-3s that require accurate iron play. Recent renovations updated the clubhouse and added modern amenities, making it a favorite among both locals and visitors. The club includes a driving range, practice greens, and a well-stocked pro shop. This course is excellent for beginners and intermediate golfers thanks to its forgiving design and relaxed atmosphere. Many players appreciate its affordability, pace of play, and abundance of wildlife sightings. 5. Lost Key Golf Club – Pensacola, Florida Nicknamed “The Lost Ball,” Lost Key is an Audubon-certified course redesigned in 2006 by world-renowned architect Arnold Palmer. The 18-hole layout includes a state-of-the-art practice facility, luxurious clubhouse, and the popular Beach Club with oceanfront dining. Lost Key is recommended for intermediate to advanced golfers who enjoy strategic shot placement. Testimonials often mention the pristine condition of the course and the friendly, knowledgeable staff that enhances the overall golfing experience. Additional Activities and Attractions Beyond the fairways, the Gulf Coast offers a wealth of attractions to make your golf vacation even more memorable. Visitors can explore the vibrant local dining scene with fresh seafood restaurants, craft breweries, and beachfront bars perfect for relaxing after a round. Outdoor activities abound, including fishing charters, dolphin cruises, kayaking, and biking along scenic coastal trails.
